It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our cherished Delt Brother and longtime House Father, Vance Chotoshi Richards ’82, who entered Chapter Eternal this week.
Brother Richards was the 1,075th initiate of the Gamma Beta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta at the Illinois Institute of Technology. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry in 1982, he went on to receive a Master of Science in Chemistry from DePaul University in 1995.
Vance began his professional career in product development with ACE Hardware, where he spent a decade formulating paints and coatings that would become staples in homes across the country.
But it was his quieter, lifelong passion for Aiki Ninjutsu that defined much of his later years. Known as Vance Chotoshi Richards in the dojo, he spent over 20 years teaching students of all ages—emphasizing not just technique, but personal growth, self-discipline, and introspective integrity. He even offered Sunday night ninja lessons to fellow brothers at the Shelter, where many learned firsthand that his skills were as real as his wisdom.
For over 42 years, Vance served as the Resident Advisor and House Father of Gamma Beta—a steadfast guardian of our home and the brotherhood within it. He embodied the values we hold most sacred: truth in his counsel, courage in his quiet leadership, faith in each generation of brothers, and power in his enduring presence. He didn’t seek the spotlight, but his impact was immeasurable. He guided countless Brothers through their formative years—not just as students or Delts, but as young men.
His absence leaves a deep void in our community, but his legacy lives on—in every story told, the enduring example he showcased, and every life he touched. Rest in peace, Brother Vance Richards.
Details regarding memorial services will be shared as they become available.
